What is the Urban Sketching Symposium?

The Urban Sketching Symposium is a three-day workshop where artists from around the world meet to draw together in the host city. It includes field sketching sessions, lectures, panels and exhibits.

Symposium participants get one-on-one interaction with local and international workshop instructors coming to the host city from every corner of the world.

The Portuguese capital of Lisbon is the host city of this year's event, which will take place at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL.) The first Urban Sketching Symposium was held in 2010 in Portland, Oregon, at Pacific Northwest College of Art. You can learn more about it at pdx2010.urbansketchers.org

The event is organized by Urban Sketchers, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the artistic, educational and storytelling value of on-location drawing, promoting its practice and helping sketchers around the world connect with each other.

Who can participate?

The Symposium is open to anyone with an interest in drawing on location, no matter their skill level or professional background.

Is there  a registration fee?

The registration fee for this year's Symposium in Lisbon is 200 euros. The fee helps cover the expenses associated with organizing the event, which is a volunteer effort of members of the Urban Sketchers nonprofit.

Is there a limit of participants?

We have a limit of 150 participants for this year's Symposium in Lisbon.

Is the Symposium in English or Portuguese?

Expect non-Portuguese instructors to conduct workshops in English, with their Portuguese workshop partners facilitating translation. Most lectures will be in English.

Field sketching workshops are 3 hours each. Registered participants can sign up for up to 5 field sketching workshops from a total of 15 different topics available. Consult the schedule for information on each workshop. The schedule is subject to change and we might consider adding or dropping sessions to meet demand.
